A solid brass South African Army trench art ashtray from the North Africa Campaign. The ashtry itself is made from an artillery shell which supports a silhouette of a springbok. Two copper egyptian coins have been incorporated as cigarette holders. The base, which has 3 metal bun feet, has a number of various markings, including the date 1941 (please see images). The springbok is left facing. I have another identical ashtray on auction with a right facing springbok.
