19 Squadron SAAF has a history marked by several formations, disbandments, and role changes. Initially established in 1939 at Swartkop, it flew transport aircraft before being disbanded. Reformed in Italy during WWII as a Beaufighter squadron, it participated in bombing and strafing missions. Post-war, it was reformed again in 1970 as a helicopter squadron, a role it continues to fulfill, operating Puma and Oryx helicopters.
