The medal was first authorized by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, though it can be awarded for captivity dating back to April 5, 1917.
It is awarded to any person who was taken prisoner or held captive while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States, provided their conduct was honorable during imprisonment.
The front of the medal depicts an American Eagle encircled by barbed wire and bayonet points.
The reverse side has space for the recipient's name and the words "FOR HONORABLE SERVICE WHILE A PRISONER OF WAR".
