The South African Heavy Artillery (S.A.H.A.) was a regiment formed in 1915 as part of the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force to serve under British command during World War I. A Brigade of Heavy Artillery was formed in Cape Town in 1914 under Lt.Col. JM Rose, RMA, expanded rapidly and eventually fielded several Heavy Artillery Brigades which took part in the German South West Africa campaign.
In 1915 five Imperial Service batteries were raised - 71, 72, 73, 74, and 75 Siege Batteries, RGA, for service in France and Flanders.
In addition, 4th Field Battery SA Mounted Rifles, served in East Africa with captured German Mountain Guns.
Then there were five 4-gun batteries of S.A.H.A. formed for service in East Africa and - later - Palestine.
