Antique Italian Solid Brass Ink Stand with Adjustable Candle Holder.
This elegant Continental brass inkstand and desk compendium is a finely crafted late 19th to early 20th-century revival piece. Designed in the spirit of 17th-century Baroque aesthetics, it features a solid brass two-tier gallery base with two removable inkwells, a pounce pot for drying ink, a pen holder and an integrated height-adjustable candle sconce perfect for illuminating evening writing. Most likely a bespoke, commissioned piece.
Although engraved with the date 1672, the construction details and craftsmanship clearly reflect a high-quality Victorian or Edwardian interpretation of earlier styles. Pieces like this were once prized desk centerpieces, combining practicality and sophistication in a single, portable writing set.
The inkstand remains in very good antique condition, displaying a rich, naturally aged patina. There is minor surface oxidation and light wear consistent with age, while all components including the mechanical elements and removable pots are intact and fully functional.
