Antique Gustav Becker Mahogany Cased Wall Clock. 84 x 41cm.

R 3,500

A large antique wall clock by renowned German clockmaker Gustav Becker. The mahogany case is ornately decorated with pillars and finials. There are three glass panels : 1 to the door, displaying the pendulum and 1 to either side, providing a side view of the mechanism. The mechanism itself is held in place with an ingenious bracket and is easily removed by loosening 2 screw bolts. The back of the mechanism is clearly stamped with the Gustav Becker "GB" and "crown and anchor" logo with "SILESIA" as well as "P42". The case is in good antique condition with a small well-executed repair to one corner. It has 2 mounting brackets to the back for hanging. The clock does run for a short period but then stops - I recommend a service. The original key is present.  The striking mechanism appears to be functional. A very handsome piece.

Gustav Becker (1819-1885) was a German clockmaker who founded the Gustav Becker clock company in Freiburg, Germany in 1850. His clocks were known for their quality and precision, and he adopted industrialized production techniques. The company continued after his death, eventually merging with Junghans in 1926. Production under the Becker name ceased after World War II.
