Vintage Masai Baton-Dagger (Rare Double Dagger). Ebony With Copper Inlay. 37cm.
A traditional Maasai baton dagger, a culturally significant weapon used by the Maasai people of East Africa, primarily in Kenya and Tanzania. This particular dagger consists of three main components: a cap or sheath cover, the main body of the baton with an exposed blade, and a smaller blade attached to a handle. The sheath and handle are crafted from dark hardwood, a common material in traditional African weaponry, while the blades are made of metal, likely iron or steel, showing evidence of manual sharpening. Decorative elements such as copper inlays and engraved patterns enhance the appearance and possibly the grip of the dagger. Notably, the middle portion of the baton features a serpentine or zig-zag engraving, which may hold symbolic meaning or serve as an ornamental detail, while the smaller handle has a knurled texture for improved grip.
This type of weapon is designed to appear as a simple baton, concealing its true function as a defensive blade. The Maasai baton dagger is traditionally used for self-defense, ceremonial purposes, and utility in daily life or hunting. Some rare versions, like this one include two bladesone hidden in the body and another in the handlemaking them highly versatile. For the Maasai, weapons like this hold deeper cultural significance, often symbolizing status, identity, and bravery. Young Maasai warriors, known as Morans, would carry such tools during their rites of passage and while patrolling their communities.
