This medal was established by the Kingdom of Italy in 1936. It was awarded to Italian military personnel who participated in the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1935-1936). The obverse of the medal depicts a half-bust of King Victor Emmanuel III. The reverse depicts an African landscape scene, along with an axe, and the inscription "AFRICA ORIENTALE" (East Africa) and "MOLTI NEMICI. MOLTO ONORE." (Many enemies. Much honor.).
The campaign in Ethiopia was notable for its brutality, including the use of chemical weapons by Italian forces.
